One of the main challenges in the design and production of complex 3D textile products is how to create a continuous volume while using the lowest number of physical connections. This is driven by the desire to manufacture faster, avoid offline manual processes, and prevent the physical weakness that results from connecting seams.
At CIRTex, research is being conducted to industrially produce whole volumetric products, reinterpreting forms that contain geometrically complex non-developable surfaces, consisting of curvatures that cannot be flattened onto one plane without distortion. When taking into consideration additional specifications – product dimensions, as well as performance requirements such as tensile strength – the task of simply manufacturing to-form requires combined expertise in textiles, geometry, and computation.
